A short note before the writing here begins.

This site is going to be a notebook. Not a portfolio. Not a marketing engine. Not a content strategy. A notebook. The kind of thing that gets written in slowly, mostly for the writer’s own clarity, occasionally read by other people, and that accumulates over years if it accumulates at all.

The plan, as far as there is one, is to write here when there is something specific worth writing about. Notes from client work, with the names taken out. Opinions about typefaces. Slow thoughts about how small design studios make a living. Reading lists when I have read something worth pointing at.

The plan is not to post on a schedule. The plan is not to grow an audience. The plan is not to be useful, on average, to anyone other than me, although I hope it is sometimes useful to other designers running small studios who are looking for the kind of writing that is not currently being published in the design press.

The model, if there is one, is the kind of personal site that grew out of the early-2010s independent web. Frank Chimero’s site. Robin Rendle’s notes. Lynn Fisher’s annual redesigns. Sites that are written, not published.
